Online Learning Curriculum: Substance Use Disorder
Kentucky AETC, in partnership with the Weitzman Institute, has provided the Southeast AETC region with the Substance Use Disorder Online Learning Curriculum. This webinar series is a great starter course for health centers that are still forming the building blocks of their MAT program, or as a refresher for health center staff that need to revitalize their understanding of the ever-changing landscape of addiction treatment.
Addiction as a Brain Disease
Objectives:
- Indicate the ways in which addiction is a chronic brain disease
- Describe how treating addiction like a chronic disease can improve outcomes
- Describe what opioid use disorder is
- Identify the rationale behind medication assisted treatment within the chronic disease model of addiction
- Identify ways to improve patient recovery by framing addiction recovery in the chronic disease model
Motivational Interviewing and Substance Use Disorder

- Describe the why behind many common behaviors in substance use disorders
- Interpret these behaviors in the context of the disease model of addiction
- Identify strategies for managing challenging behaviors in a healthcare setting
Trauma Informed Care and Substance Use Disorder
Objectives:
- Describe the connection between Adverse Childhood Experiences and health outcomes
- Outline what is trauma informed care
- Illustrate the connection between trauma and substance use disorder
- Identify what trauma informed care looks like in multiple aspects of an organization
